Are you struggling?

This time last year, I was in one of the hardest situations I had ever faced as a teacher. My class was incredibly tough and school was no longer the safe, supportive place it had once been. I know firsthand how exhausting and overwhelming it can be to struggle through each day, wondering how you'll make it to the end of the year.

If you're in that place right now, please know that you are not alone. You will get through this. And most importantly, you don’t have to do it alone.

Here are a few things that helped me—and might help you too:

🔹 Look after yourself first. Your mental health matters. If you're constantly running on empty, you're not going to have anything left to give. Prioritise rest, set boundaries, and don’t feel guilty for taking time to recharge (that includes taking mental health days).

🔹 Talk to someone. Whether it’s a trusted colleague, a friend or a mentor, opening up about what you're going through can help you process the stress and feel less isolated.

🔹 Seek professional support. Many states offer free counseling sessions for teachers and talking to a professional can provide tools to manage stress and difficult situations.

🔹 Find small wins. Some days it might feel like everything is going wrong, but even the smallest victories—like a student finally understanding a concept or showing kindness—are worth celebrating.

🔹 Remember, it won’t always be this bad. Right now it might feel like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel but it won't always be this way.

And if you’ve tried everything and staying is harming your well-being, it’s okay to leave. Walking away isn’t failing—it’s making a choice to prioritise yourself. Sometimes, closing the door on a bad situation is the only way to open another to something better.

A year ago, I couldn’t imagine how different things would be now. I changed schools and it made all the difference.

So, if you're struggling, please know that brighter days are ahead. You are stronger than you know and whatever decision you make, you will find your way to a better place. 💛
