Tough class?

Some years start with the realisation that this class is going to be challenging and will require more of you. More patience, more structure, more emotional energy, more consistency. And when you’re only a few weeks in, it’s completely normal to already be wondering how you’re going to make it to December.

If that’s you right now, please know this: you’re not failing, you’re just teaching a hard class.

Here are some gentle reminders and practical strategies to help you get through the early weeks and find your footing again.

🌱 It Will Get Better

Right now, everything feels heightened - behaviours, emotions, your own stress levels. But as routines settle and relationships strengthen, things usually improve. Stick with your systems. Stick with your expectations. Stick with your boundaries. Consistency is your best friend in a tough class.

🤝 Build Relationships + Hold Clear Expectations

These two things work together - not against each other.

  • Be warm, but firm
  • Be predictable, not reactive
  • Follow through on logical consequences
  • Notice the good, even when it’s small

Students respond to adults who are steady, fair, and genuinely invested in them. You don’t need to be perfect - just consistent.

🆘 Ask for Help (Where You Can)

Not everyone has supportive admin - I get that. But lean on the people you do have.

  • A colleague who understands
  • A mentor teacher
  • A deputy or admin member you trust
  • The school psych or pastoral care team

Be clear about what you need. Advocate for yourself and your students. You deserve support.

☕ Take Breaks - You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup

If you’re teaching a challenging class, there will be days when you simply need a break - a real one. Taking a mental health day isn’t a sign of weakness or poor teaching; it’s a necessary reset. You can’t show up for your students when you’re running on empty, and stepping away for a day can give you the space to breathe, regroup, and come back with more clarity and capacity. 🎉 Celebrate the Little Wins

With a tough class, the big wins might be few and far between right now. So celebrate the tiny ones:

  • A student who followed a direction the first time
  • A smooth transition
  • A calmer morning
  • A single positive interaction with a tricky student

These moments matter. They’re evidence that things are shifting, even if slowly.

📝 Document Everything

When you’re exhausted, documentation is the last thing you want to do - but it’s the thing that will protect you later.

Record:

  • incidents
  • patterns of behaviour
  • communication with parents
  • strategies you’ve tried
  • support you’ve requested

This evidence can be used to advocate for extra support or, if necessary, to be used to help take stress leave.

💛 And One More Thing…

You are not alone. Every year, thousands of teachers start with a class that tests them in ways they didn’t expect. You’re not doing anything wrong. You’re not behind. You’re not failing.

You’re doing the hard work of showing up - and that counts.

Remember it won't always be like this. This situation is temporary and you can do hard things!
