Description
Place value snowmen are a fun way to practice place value and allow students to understand numbers are made up of parts.
Expose students to the concept that numbers are made up of parts. The parts for the number 58 are 50 and 8 or could also be said as 5 tens and 8 ones. Get students to tell you the parts for a variety of numbers using the idea of making a snowman.
Then use this set for a whole class game where students are given the hat (whole number) and must find the parts which are spread out on the floor or a table. Prepare this activity by printing, laminating and then cutting each snowman into 3 pieces.
For a follow-up lesson, get students to make up their own snowman. The snowmen can also be used as a group or independent activity and makes for a quick and fun assessment strategy.
Included are:
- Explanation page (1 page)
- 32 Snowmen ( in 2 formats) covering tens and ones (8 pages)
- 32 Snowmen ( in 2 formats) covering hundreds, tens and ones (8 pages)
*Please note that the snowmen are joint together in the pdf for ease of cutting once printed. The second and third thumbnail shows you the exact sheets - they will not look like whole circles as depicted in the fourth thumbnail.
