This download contains information slides about totems, as used by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People of Australia. 

Slides include 'What is a totem?' 'How are totems used?' 'How are totems assigned' and examples of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander totems and their use in modern times.

There is also a single worksheet that can be used after going through the presentation.

This links well with the Australian Curriculum HASS learning aspects and is great to use during NAIDOC Week.

Please note: This presentation does not include any pictures but does contain some links to view examples of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artwork and artefacts featuring totems.

Included are:

  • Presentation/posters (7 pages)
  • Worksheet (1 page)

No instructions on how to use this resource are included. Suggested would be to have students read about the totems as a class and fill out the retrieval chart. This activity could also be done as a jigsaw or a read the room activity.
